The people, companies and numbers in this example are invented.

What makes it work

  • A summary about the job she wants. It names the kind of role, the year she graduated, and the two things she has done that matter most for it.
  • Skills named the way job adverts name them. Tally Prime, GST returns and bank reconciliation are the words an accounts advert uses, so a recruiter, or a search, finds them.
  • An internship written like a job. Three bullet points, each saying what she did and how much: returns for 12 clients, 400 invoices checked.
  • Marks for each stage of school. Indian employers often ask for Class X and XII results as well as the degree, so each is listed with its board and score.
  • Something beyond the classroom. Volunteering with the NSS and playing chess at district level give an interviewer something to ask about.

Make it yours

  • No internship? Put your final-year project, a part-time job or a college role in its place, and write it the same way: what you did, and what came of it.
  • Give your marks as your certificates do, as a percentage or a CGPA.
  • One page or two is plenty for a first job. Leave out what does not help with this one.
