Senior data analyst

Dana Whitfield

Director of Analytics

Northgate Insurance

Chicago, IL

Dear Ms. Whitfield:

I am applying for the Senior Data Analyst role at Northgate Insurance. I bring five years of experience turning raw data into forecasts and dashboards that people act on, most recently as a senior data analyst at Lakeshore Health Partners.

At Lakeshore, I built a no-show forecast that lets our 14 clinics overbook safely, filling about 1,200 more appointments a year. I also replaced 30 weekly spreadsheet reports with four Tableau dashboards that every clinic manager now uses. Before that, at Prairie Goods, my analysis of loyalty-card data reshaped weekly promotions and raised average basket size by 6%.

Your posting mentions modernizing claims reporting and building a pricing forecast. I have done both kinds of work, and I enjoy explaining results to people who do not spend their days in spreadsheets: I present to clinic managers and finance leads every month.

I would welcome the chance to talk about how I could help your team. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Marcus Reed

What makes it work

  • The role and the reason in two sentences. The first paragraph names the job and sums up what he brings to it.
  • The results that matter most. He does not repeat his resume. He picks the forecast and the dashboards, then adds one result from his earlier job.
  • The employer’s needs, in its own words. The third paragraph names two things the job posting asks for, and says he has done both. This is the paragraph to rewrite for each application.
  • Proof he can explain his work. Senior analysts present to people who are not analysts, so he says that he does, and to whom.

Make it yours

  • Read the job posting and pick two or three things it asks for. Write a sentence on each.
  • Keep the letter under a page, in three or four paragraphs.
  • Use the hiring manager’s name if you can find it. “Dear Hiring Manager:” is the usual fallback in the US.
